Authorized Economic Operator (AEO)
Authorized Economic Operator (AEO)
Created with the aim of providing greater efficiency and predictability for cargo in international trade flows, the AEO Program consists of the Federal Revenue Service’s recognition of operators in the international logistics chain who demonstrate the ability to manage risks related to the physical security of cargo and tax and customs compliance. There are three types of AEO, each with its own requirements, criteria, and benefits related to customs procedures, both domestically and abroad.
- AEO Security (AEO-S): Refers to the physical security of cargo in the logistics chain. Benefits apply to exports.
- AEO Compliance (AEO-C): Divided into two levels, this refers to compliance with tax and customs obligations. Benefits apply to imports.
- Integrated AEO: Incorporation of consenting agencies. (Still in the planning phase; legislation not yet published).
